又是一年毕业季，每年的应届生都会面临着英文学术论文问题，很多人的论文翻译是无法自己独立完成的，即使侥幸翻译成功了，也要被论文导师狠狠批评一番。出现这些问题的主要原因还是普通中文学术论文和英文学术论文之间存在着很大的距离，英文学术论文要求更为复杂苛刻。

论文的英文部分往往会涉及到很生僻的词语和合成词，这些词语很有可能在传统的书籍词典，电子词典中查不到。借助于网络，任何词语只要在网络上出现过就有可能被搜索引擎抓取到这个词所在的页面，从而被我们搜索到。

不同的场合背景下，句子表达有着不同的方式。在论文的语境下，翻译更多地要注重言简意赅、用词到位不花哨。

如果说中文文章常用文言词、半文半白的语言来锤炼表达、提升逼格的话，英文能拿出的王牌便是希腊词源的单词以及拉丁语了。从罗马帝国时代到中世纪，拉丁语一直都是欧洲教会和古典文献所使用的语言，在当今的英文学术写作中仍保留了大量的希腊语、拉丁语缩写，用以更加准确、优美地表达。

拉丁语在学术领域的地位至今仍是神圣的，美国的大学生和老师仍以高中和本科学过的拉丁语为骄傲的谈资。作为传统的彰显，许多大学至今保留着拉丁语的校训，哈佛的“Veritas（真理）”，耶鲁的“Lux et Veritas（光明与真理）”, 宾大的“Leges Sine Moribus Vanae（法无德不立）”，哥大的“In lumine Tuo videbimus lumen（在光明中寻找光明）”，布朗大学的“In Deo Speramus（上帝带来希望）”。有些博士学位的证书便会以拉丁语庄重地开篇：“恭喜你对人类的知识有所创新, 因此授予你这个学位。” 除此之外，还有一些拉丁语缩写被用于学术写作中，常见于举例、逻辑、解释、注释等等，以对应学术写作的正式语体。
